Production of Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vehicles is performed since 1995 till present. Assembling of these cars is organized in Germany, the USA, Algeria, Jordan, Iran, Argentina, Brazil, China, Russia. In 1995 this car model won annual car novelties competition “International Van of the Year”. Moreover, the car was given “Van of the Year” title according to version of “Professional Van and Light Truck” magazine in 2007 and 2008. Twins of this cars are same-named models from Dodge and Freightliner.
History of Mercedes-Benz Sprinter cars
The model is presented by two generations and three restyled versions. The first generation, W901-905 came into production in 1995 aiming at replacing popular but obsolete TN model. Creation of the new vehicle was the result of collaboration between Daimler-Benz AG and Volkswagen AG. It was available in versions of van, minivan, chassis, 2- and 4-door dropside truck. Modifications with high roof were available for Sprinter vans and minibuses. Moreover, cars with short (3000 mm) and long (4025 mm) wheelbase were offered. Also, there were modifications with an extended body – up to 6525 mm.
During restyling in 2000 the model got headlights with smoother lines, modernized front bumper with two steps on the sides. The upper part of the company logo was now mounted just above the radiator grille. The car cabin became more spacious, due to relocation of the gearbox lever to the dashboard lower part.
Production of the second generation, W906, started in 2006. 6-cylinder diesel motors with 190 hp power and petrol ones with 258 hp power appeared in the available engines line. Basic equipment of the cars included stability control system. The list of available modifications was expanded. Mercedes-Benz Sprinter chassis with 5 tons loading capacity came to the market, as well as modification 316 NGT, which was able to run on gasoline and natural gas. Vans with double cab and additional seats row became available. Also, the cars with three wheelbase variants (3250 mm, 3665 mm, 4325 mm) were on sale. Moreover, the manufacturer offered choice of three body height variants (maximum is 3055 mm) and four variants of length – up to 7345 mm.
The significant advantage of W906 van in comparison with predecessors was presence of higher and wider cargo compartment door, which allowed to use space inside of the luggage compartment more rationally. The door with electric drive was offered optionally.
Features of restyled Mercedes-Benz Sprinter W906 cars
The restyled model is produced since 2013 in versions of minibus, van, 2- and 4-door dropside truck, and 2- and 4-door chassis. Renewed cars were easily recognizable by the large pentagonal radiator grille and enlarged angular headlights. The manufacturer equipped these cars with rear high-stiff leaf-springs, reinforced shock absorbers, and ECO Gear transmission, which allows to save fuel even at high-speed driving.
In basic configuration Sprinter cars are equipped with numerous active safety systems: ABS, emergency brake system, anti-skid system, electronic brake force distribution system. Optionally, the car can be equipped with Collision Prevention Assist. It gives signals, if a distance to other vehicle or any obstacle became critical. Also, another assistant is available; it warns the driver about unwilling change of the driving lane. While the headlamps adaptive lighting control system provides optimal observability regardless to a road situation.
