History of Mercedes-Benz A-Class cars
During existence of the model the manufacturer presented three generations and three restyled versions. Debut of the first generation, W168, in version of 5-door hatchback took place at the Geneva Motor Show in 1997. During model development the manufacturer used so-called “sandwich” – a special system of impact energy absorption in head-on collision. It presupposes presence of double-layered floor, due to which the engine and transmission won’t move into the cabin in case of impact, but move below the body bottom. Moreover, usage of double-layered floor allowed to improve observability, as the seats for driver and passengers are mounted much higher, than in other cars.
Exterior and interior of A-Class hatchback W168 was developed by British designer Steve Mattin, graduate of Coventry University. For this job he was awarded “Designer of the Year” title in 1997 according to version of notorious “Autocar” magazine.
The car of W169 generation was created in 2004. 3-door hatchback was added to traditional 5-door one. The manufacturer equipped the cars with numerous safety systems. This, standard equipment included front airbags, stability control system, anti-lock brake system. The car of this generation got maximal rating according to Euro NCAP crash-test results – 5 stars.
The manufacturer presented the third generation of A-Class – W176 on Geneva Motor Show in 2012. The “Sandwich” system wasn’t used any more for this cars, as they were built on a brand new platform, MFA (Modular Front Architecture). The list of basic equipment of these cars was added by the anti-lock brake system, emergency brake assist, collision prevention assist and assist monitoring of driver’s fatigue.
Features of restyled Mercedes-Benz A-Class W176 cars
Restyled version of the third generation was presented in 2015. The manufacturer was able to add sportive look to renewed 5-door hatchbacks. Prolonged headlights, concave radiator grille with the large brand logo in the center, bulges of the body sides, and exhaust pipes, integrated into the rear bumper and decorated with chrome linings – all this formed dynamics of the model.
