Faults of brake master cylinder
seizing of the piston;
swelling of the seals;
damage to the tank cap vent valve;
swelling of the flexible hoses;
break of tightness between the inner seal and the piston;
blockage of the compensation ports;
damage to the seal at one of the circuits;
liquid leakage from the reservoir in the joints.
Symptoms of the master cylinder faults
impossibility of the brake pedal movement for the entire stroke;
skidding during braking;
too soft stroke of the brake pedal;
poor braking;
excessively rigid brake pedal;
rattle, whistle or squeal during braking;
increase of braking distance.
Causes of the master cylinder faults
use of low-quality brake fluid;
improper adjustment of the pedal;
insufficient tightness of the inner piston seal;
installation of substandard hoses;
mechanical damage;
low quality road surface.
Diagnostics
First of all pay attention to the readings of control indicators on the dashboard. The appropriate indicator will alert you about malfunction of the braking system. The first step is an examination of the master cylinder body. It is important to detect the brake fluid lekage places, which can be both on pipe connections and at circuit outlets. Do not forget to identify mechanical damages. The next step is pressure measurement in the circuits. For this purpose, use the gauge which has to be attached to the holes on these devices. Now you need to compare the figures with the values, provided by the manufacturer. Whereas, you can determine whether the brake master cylinder is sealed properly only on a special stand.
Repair and replacement of the brake master cylinder
Carrying out the replacement you will have to perform a few steps:
disable the voltage from the battery;
remove the engine compartment acoustic trim (unscrew bolts and unfasten clamps);
disconnect the plug with the wires from the sensor indicating the brake fluid level;
loosen the four screws that hold the brake pipes;
remove the master cylinder from the pins (do not forget to pour all the liquid into the new cylinder);
mount a new reservoir with bushes on the new element;
install the master cylinder.
Be sure to check the correctness of the brake pedal performance after the replacement. If the pedal stroke is too "soft", you must bleed the brake system.
