Ford Transit are light commercial vehicles (LCV), which are produced since 1952 till present. At various times these cars were manufactured in Belgium, Great Britain, Turkey, Australia, New Zealand, Vietnam, Belarus, Russia, the USA and other countries. During existence of the model, more than 8 millions of its copies were sold, which is one of the highest sales values amongst cars of this class. In Europe the car was among the market leaders for 40 years, and it became a top-selling van in the USA in 2016. In 2001 and 2007 the model received “International Van of the Year” award from authoritative Eisma Industrial Media publishing company.

History of Ford Transit cars

The car has five generations and two restyled versions. The first generation – Taunus vans, was produced for the German market only since 1952 till 1965.

The second generation of the car was produced since 1965 till 1978. Creating this model the company used compact V4 engines. Thanks to usage of such engine, the manufacturers were able to make the car compact, which promoted popularity of the model. It is remarkable that according to New Scotland Yard representatives, the Transit, was used for 95% bank robberies in Great Britain in 1972. This is explained by good loading capacity (up to 1.75 tons) and high performance of the car.

After a restyling in 1978 the model got slightly prolonged bonnet and a wider radiator grille, on which the headlights were mounted. 2- and 4-door pickups, 2-door chassis and 4-door minibus were added to the traditional van. Moreover, the manufacturer offered special modifications for police and ambulance.

The third Ford Transit generation, production of which started in 1986, was marked by significant changes in exterior. The bonnet and windshield were now mounted at the same angle, the bumper became more massive, and reduced radiator grille had honeycomb structure. Cars, equipped with folding tables, curtains and foldable rear seats were produced in the fourth generation, which was manufactured from 2000 to 2006.

Features of V generation Ford Transit

Debut of the van version of the fifth generation model, took place at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in 2013. The Transit van became the result of collaboration of European and American subsidiaries of the company and was marketed as a “World Car”. In 2014 the manufacturer offered 2-door chassis and 5-door minibus – Kombi.

Thanks to elongated headlights and enlarged bumper grille the car looks more presentable. Van length is 5531 mm, width – 2059 mm, and height – 2550 mm. Volume of the luggage compartment was increased from 6,55 m3 to 9.3 m3.

The basic configuration of the van includes power mirrors and hydraulic power steering. Comfortable adjustable seats and foldable table, built into the passenger seatback  increase the car’s comfort level. Additionally, you can equip the cabin with 230V power socket and air-conditioner with manual control. The luggage compartment has protective floor coating and tie-down points for cargo fastening.

Car safety is provided by the following: ABS, emergency braking assistance and hill climb assist systems, ESP. Lane Keeping Assist system and a rear view camera are presented as additional options.
