Ford Mondeo cars are produced by European branch of American car concern Ford Motor Company since 1993 till present time. Cars are assembled in Belgium, Russia, Spain, China, Taiwan, Thailand. The model took numerous prestigious awards. In particular, in 1994 it was recognised as “European Car of the Year” and in 1998 it became a “Best Selling Family Car” in Great Britain. Moreover, it was repeatedly declared a “Best Estate Car” by a reputable “What Car?” magazine. Up to 2000 the model was presented as Mercury Mystique and Ford Contour in America, and since 2013 – as Ford Fusion.
History of Ford Mondeo
Five generations and two facelifts are presented in the model range. The car’s first generation was presented in 1993. The manufacturer marketed the model as a “world car” and planned to sell it around the globe. Designing this car cost the company 6 billions of US dollars, which has made this automotive project one of the most expensive in the world. Development of the Mondeo sedan and station wagon concepts was supervised by the British engineer and designer John Oldfield.
Production of the third generation started at the beginning of 2000. This car, according to the manufacturer, was one of the safest on the market. The car was equipped with front and side airbags, anti-lock brakes and IPS and ESP systems.
The fourth generation car, which went to production in 2007 differed from its predecessor by shape of headlights, rear lights, front bumper and its grille. Location of the exhaust pipe was changed, and mouldings appeared on front and rear parts of the body. A sedan of this generation can be seen in one of James Bond movies – the “Casino Royale”.
The fifth generation of the model was unveiled on North American International Auto Show in Detroit in 2012. But its production was delayed for a year, to improve some technical characteristics, and then – for another year when the Belgian Ford factory in Genk closed.
Features of the fifth generation of Ford Mondeo cars
Manufacturing of these cars started in 2014 and continues now. The model is produced in three versions: sedan, 5-door liftback and station wagon.
Representatives of the fifth generation are equipped with comfortable 4-way manually adjustable seats. As an option, special inflatable safety belts are available; they are filled with gas in case of collision, thus relieving pressure on a chest.
The manufacturer has expanded the list of available options for Ford Mondeoliftbacks, sedans and station wagons. Particularly, LED headlights became available: they have many lighting modes, according to speed, steering wheel turning angle, weather conditions, etc. For instance, when the car is moving along a residential area, improved lighting of the side area is activated. Also the headlights are able to automatically switch high beam to low when an oncoming car is detected.
The car can be equipped with SYNC® 3 multimedia system with voice control. One of its major functions is automatic emergency services call in case of a road accident. The car of a new generation can be equipped with a panoramic roof, adaptive cruise control and parking assistant.
