How do you know that it’s time to replace suspension arms on a VW Polo?
The average service life of these components is at least 200,000 km. The bushings pressed into them last 80,000–100,000 km, and the ball joints 60,000–80,000 km. However, these intervals depend on the car’s operating conditions.
Symptoms of faulty components:
- the vehicle changes direction spontaneously and the body rolls when cornering
- when travelling on bad roads, the suspension produces unusual sounds
- strong vibration transferred to the steering wheel while driving
- rattling sounds during manoeuvring
- significant force needed to turn the steering wheel
- tyres wear out unevenly
- impossible to align the wheels properly
What are the most common problems?
When the car wheels hit a bump or pothole in the road, the components can deform. Apart from that, ball joints can get stuck or break down, their dust boots can be torn and the rubber parts of bushings can crack.
Can suspension arms for VW Polo be repaired?
If these components are not severely damaged, it is possible to restore their working capacity by replacing faulty bushings and/or ball joints. In the first case, the component has to be secured with vices and pressed out from its seat with a removal tool.
When installing new ball joints, be careful not to mount them on the wrong side. The L3 marking on the part means “left wheel”, L4 or R3 – “right wheel”. When installing components, use a torque wrench and apply the tightening torque recommended by the manufacturer.
Bushings are removed after the component has been demounted. When pressing in the new one, make sure that the two marks on it coincide with those on the arm.
Is it possible to DIY-replace these parts in cars of this model?
The replacement procedure for these components can differ depending on the year of production and version of your car. You will need:
- a car lift
- 16-mm and 18-mm open-ended spanners, 18-mm ring spanner;
- torque and lug wrenches.
Steps:
- Chock the wheels and lift the front part of your vehicle.
- Undo all the fasteners of the arm.
- Remove fasteners of the front and rear bushings from their seats.
- Dismantle the arm carefully pulling it out of the bracket first at the front and then at the back.
- Install a new part and assemble the unit following the steps in reverse order.
Please note! You should only tighten the bolts with the suspension loaded. For this reason, you have to either return the car to the ground or place a support under the ball joint. After completing all the steps, be sure to have your wheels aligned at a garage.
Is it necessary to replace these components for VW Polo in pairs on one axle?
Usually, both components break down at around the same time. Therefore, they should be replaced in pairs.
