Every driver knows the importance of clutch system in the cars, as its movement will depend on it. But what influences parts operation to provide transmission of torque from the engine to the transmission? Clutch plate - that's one of the most important elements of the system that holds the power of the car. It is located between the flywheel and pressure plate. Clutch plate is also an important part in the operation of the whole system. In its central section there are installed special grooves due to which the disc is connected with the original shaft of the gearbox. Thickness of the part is about eight millimetres. When you press the pedal, for some time clutch disc is in a stable position and then begins to spin at speeds of up to 6,000 revolutions per minute.

This action leads to the fact that some components heat and rub. But the work of clutch depends on them. During the transmission of torque, the clutch disc rotates on the shaft of the transmission. In this case the speed of rotation is gradually reduced until the driver again will switch the speed. If he removes the foot from the pedal, all processes will promote the secondary connection of the engine with transmission. In order to make it softer in the central compartment of the clutch plate there are special springs. It happens that the driver dramatically lowers the clutch. This leads to stroke, which occurs in case of a direct connection of transmission with the engine. For their safe-keeping and integrity it is very important to mitigate the impact, which is done due to these springs.

Faults of clutch pressure plate
  • burrs on the flywheel working surface;
  • shrinkage or distortion of the pressure plate;
  • worn or damaged part;
  • corrosion or contamination.
Symptoms of clutch pressure plate faults
  • abnormal sounds while turning the clutch on and off;
  • increase in fuel consumption;
  • engine runs up, but the vehicle does not increase speed;
  • impossibility to completely disengage the clutch;
  • the system is jerky.
Causes of clutch pressure plate faults
  • components of low quality;
  • leakage of the system;
  • accumulation of dirt, dust or moisture on the elements;
  • sporty driving style;
  • poor-quality road surface.
Diagnosis of clutch pressure plate

Diagnosis of the pressure plate should be carried out in complex with the test of the entire clutch system. When the engine is running, press the clutch pedal several times. During these actions, it is important to listen, whether strange sounds appear: squeak, rattle, banging and so on. It is also important that the pedal itself has smooth ride without jamming. Also, do not forget to take measurements of the working stroke (the distance from the pedal to the floor when the clutch mechanism is switched on and off). Fixed rate is no more than 145 millimeters. The next step, start and fully warm up the engine. First, turn the clutch on and then reverse gear. Hearing crunching or grinding, be sure that the pressure plate or the driven plate is faulty in the clutch system.

Replacing the clutch pressure plate

Repair of this part is not available, only the replacement is carried out. To replace the item you need:

  • set the car on a lift or a service pit;
  • disconnect the driveline and the clutch slave cylinder from the gearbox;
  • remove wire tips from the light switch terminals;
  • disconnect the clutch case from the cylinder block, and the power unit back support cross-beam from the body;
  • unscrew the two nuts securing the support;
  • move the gearbox all the way into the back of the floor hole (do not forget to put a support at the back of the gearbox);
  • unscrew six bolts securing the clutch cover, hold the flywheel using a tire lever (turn the crankshaft to access them);
  • remove the clutch pressure plate and install a new one, repeat the procedure in reverse order.
