Find Parking assist system that will fit your car

Parking radars are systems designed to make parking easier and safer. The operating principle of such devices is to scan the area around the car with sensors and to warn the driver if there are any obstacles.

Types of parking radars

Depending on location of the sensors, they can be front, rear, or both front and rear. These systems differ from each other in the number of sensors. The more sensors are used, the wider is the angle of view and the more accurate is the radar. Besides, systems facilitating  parking can be categorised depending on the method of connection:

  • Wired. Ultrasonic devices with embedded sensors.
  • Electromagnetic. Sensors of these systems are made in the form of a metal strip which is mounted on the inner side of the bumper throughout its length. Thanks to their design, these devices eliminate blind spots in the system.
  • Wireless. Information from the control unit is transmitted to the indicator by radio waves, therefore, there is no need to connect these elements with wires.

Parking systems can alert the driver to obstacles with the help of a sound signal, light indication or display the image from the camera. The latter devices require a high resolution screen. Some models project the image onto a windscreen.

Parking sensors: maintenance tips

In order to install the system, you should use professional vehicle maintenance services, as certain skills of dealing with electrical equipment are required. As a rule, an electronic control unit is placed in the luggage compartment of the car, and sensors are fitted in places where the bumper is bent. If there are more than two sensors, the rest of them are placed around the perimeter of the car body, at equal distance between them.

The sensors should be connected to the control unit, and the latter should be connected to the information display device with observance of the instructions of the parking radar manufacturer. If the screen is located on the dashboard, the wires are usually laid out under the interior trim panels. When the radar is installed, you should test it and make sure that it detects obstacles in a proper way.

It is important to clean the external part of sensors from time to time. If they are covered with dirt, snow or ice, this might affect the accuracy of readings. You should also bear in mind that different devices operate in a certain temperature range. For example, high quality models keep on working flawlessly in the range of −35 to +80 °С.
