What types of air filters are available for the Ford Focus?
The car manufacturer equips the vehicles with paper components that are capable of trapping particles as small as 1 micron. Two types of these components are used:
Panel parts. They were fitted on the vehicles of the first generation. Porous accordion-fold paper was used as a filtering media.
Cylinder parts. These were installed on the II generation cars and are effective thanks to their large filtering surface.
As part of engine upgrading, high-flow components can be used. Their filtering medium is made of foam or fabric impregnated with oil. They are characterised by high performance and ease of maintenance. These parts need regular cleaning.
Where is this component located in the Ford Focus?
This part is found in the engine compartment, inside a plastic housing located near the left headlight assembly.
How do I know it’s time to change the air filter in my car?
The signs of a worn-out element:
increased fuel consumption;
rough idle;
hard starting engine.
It’s also possible to detect malfunctions visually: a component that needs replacing is usually covered with a thick layer of dust and dirt or engine oil stains.
The usual replacement interval of this consumable is about every 10,000 - 15,000 kilometres. If your car’s average annual mileage is shorter, the part has to be replaced twice: before the summer and winter seasons.

To carry out the job, you’ll only need a combination ratchet wrench with a 7 mm socket.
Can I replace the air filter on my Ford Focus myself? How much time will it take?
The installation doesn’t require any special skills and takes 10–15 minutes. The steps are the following:
open the bonnet;
undo the four fastening screws;
remove the housing lid;
extract the worn component;
wipe the housing inside with a damp cloth;
apply some silicone lubricant to the seal of the part;
pull the hose slightly towards the engine and carefully insert the new part into its mounting seat until it clicks in place;
cover the housing with the lid and tighten the fasteners.
